‘You used to call me Marie…’ follows two souls through eight Métis love stories at eight distinct periods in history. Moving through different lives, we watch Iskwewo, Napew and Mistatim before and after the colonization of Treaty 6. We watch the emergence of the Métis nations across the plains, the robust colonization that arises from the fur trade and the political uprising of the Métis association of Alberta in the 1930’s. Beginning in a creation story and ending in the present, ‘You used to call me Marie…’ shares the Callihoo women’s love stories, their fight for their people as well as their resilient sovereignty as Métis women.

NIGHTLIGHT is a 30-min solo choreographed and danced by George Stamos, drawing upon the unique and contrasting qualities of nocturnal human sensations. This work's first iteration will premiere in Regina, presented by New Dance Horizons, in early September 2021.
NIGHTLIGHT is inspired by the restful, agitated, and exhilarating qualities of life at night. Whether seen through the lens of contemplative solitude or vibrant nightlife, NIGHTLIGHT interplays between public revelry and private repose. From the calming cocoon of a nightlight to the hypnotic intensity of club dancing, this solo evokes how we all move towards nocturnal rituals that make us feel safe. The NIGHTLIGHT project received support from the Canada Council for the Arts and is a co-production with Agora de la Danse. This work was created during residencies with Nyata Nyata, Par BLeux and Agora de la Danse in 2021. |

In my body of work, I have focused on the resilience and representation of diverse queer people in ways that travel across the disciplines of movement, performance art, theatre, music and digital art. I am interested in dissolving binary thinking about categories of gender and sexuality while maintaining recognition of spaces that exist between and across them. As I have continued to integrate digital technologies into my work over the years my objective has been to resist fetishizing them but to view them as tools for human expression. In my practice as a filmmaker, I often use the medium as a way to represent lived experiences in surrealistic ways with humour, text and movement. With a foundation in occidental contemporary dance practices, nightclub dances, and ballet, my work is greatly informed by my studies of Central African dance technique at Nyata Nyata school of dance (2011-2019), and my academic research associated with the Graduate Diploma program in Communication Studies at Concordia University (2017-2018). |
