Badia Star
Badia Star
Middle Eastern dance performer, choreographer and instructor since 1976.
I started Belly dancing in Vancouver as "Star Bell" with my teacher Farideh/ Cathryn Balk who was a protégé of Jamila Salimpour of California.

I devoted my life to the dance, travelling internationally to enjoy the experience of live Middle Eastern music and culture. I performed in Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Greek clubs and restaurants, hundreds of weddings, concerts, cultural festivals, television appearances and feature films.

As I was teaching and studying the different dance and music styles I finally settled on Egypt as my focus. From 1982 I lived and performed in Cairo for 4 years. I was the first Canadian dancer to acquire a licence to perform in 5 Star Hotel night clubs in Cairo where I was the main attraction in several including the Cairo Marriott, Ramses Hilton, Salam Hyatt, and Siag Penta.
When I was first contracted in Cairo I was asked to change my name from "Star" to "Badia" in order to appear less foreign. My name is not to be mistaken for the famous “Badiah El Mousabni” (Bah-dee-ah) My Name is pronounced differently and has a different meaning – “Badia” sounding like “Nadia” and means Oasis or the place where the Bedouins live.

I had costumes designed and made for me by Madam Abla and Madam Rowya. I learned every single detail of how Egyptian costumes were made because Abla allowed me to sit and watch while I enjoyed tea with her in her workshop located in the Mohamed Ali district of old Cairo.

I had original music scores composed for me by Mustafa Hamido and Farouk Salama who were both well known for their dance compositions for other famous Egyptian dancers.
I was blessed with the good fortune to study with the late Ibrahim Akef (cousin of dancer Naima Akef) who choreographed several dances for me and taught me much about improvisation and stage presence. I also had some time with Rakia Hassan who choreographed a piece for me.

I attended authentic Zar sessions for women in a village outside of Cairo which was a ritual closed to foreigners. I recorded the music of one session which I still have on file.

I am truly grateful to Nando Abib who was my main agent in Cairo, and to Mohamed Shamrook my orchestra leader and Nai player who kept me safe and kept all those 15 musicians and singers in my orchestra under control and on time for all our gigs around Cairo!

In 1986 returned to Canada to further my education in Health and Wellness and become a mother of a beautiful daughter. In Canada I performed within the Middle Eastern communities under the name "Badia Star". .
I taught dance classes, choreographed for my performance group El Kawakeb, trained other professional dancers and teachers and co-produced the CD “Raksit Badia” for Belly dance with Ali Kurdi who composed and recorded the entrance megance “Raksit Badia” for me.
I retired from dance performance in 2005.
I am currently focusing on my other professions including teaching Yoga, Yoga Therapy, Shiatsu, Reiki and Wellness Coaching, while I continue to offer monthly dance workshops and private lessons in Toronto, as well as national an internationally upon request for women who are interested in Older style Raqs Sharqi (Belly dance) I
I am forever grateful to all the Egyptians who accepted me as an accomplished dance artist and helped to make my dream come true, kept me safe and encouraged me. I will never forget the abundant kindness extended to me even if it appears that I have.
I thank all of you who have supported and encouraged me throughout my dance career and to those who continue to inspire me to keep my foot in the Oasis!

Soft Foot Treatments

The practice of the Mitzvah Technique and Itcush Method focuses on the body in motion. It acts to release and align the musculoskeletal system in lying sitting and walking. The Foundational Exercises, sometimes called Soft Foot, are a series of movements used to restore connection between the brain, spine and foot. These simple actions were developed to emulate walking on sand. They act to deconstruct the walking pattern while transforming balance, and creating a soft supple resilient foot.

Ashley Johnson is a Registered Somatic Movement Educator and Therapist trained in a group facilitation and hands on bodywork in the Mitzvah Technique/Itcush Method Teacher and Continuum Movement. She works with diverse populations in movement re-education, chronic pain management and injury rehabilitation. As a dance artist and educator, she creates interdisciplinary site specific creations that blend embodiment practice and creative process. Find her at www.constantlyseekingsoftness.ca

Kana Nemoto is a certified Mitzvah Technique (MT)/Itcush Method (IM) teacher who has been honing her craft across the Canadian prairies and Japan. Kana's unique dance training with the MT and IM framework giver her an expertise in whole body functional movement for artists, dancers and community members alike. With her dedication for continuous learning and collaboration with other MT teachers throughout the world, Kana is eager to share her work with people in motion.
